Copenhagen

Nyhavn, Tivoli and New Nordic magic

Colourful canal houses, Michelin-starred kitchens, and the world's happiest cycling culture make Copenhagen one of Europe's most joyful city escapes.

Copenhagen has quietly become one of the world's great cities — a place where centuries-old architecture meets cutting-edge design, where Michelin stars are awarded to restaurants serving foraged herbs and fermented grains, and where everyday life is lived with a lightness and elegance that other cities can only admire. The Danish capital rewards the discerning traveller who comes not to rush, but to savour.

Nyhavn: The Soul of the City

No image of Copenhagen is more iconic than Nyhavn — the 17th-century canal lined with candy-coloured townhouses, bobbing wooden schooners, and tables spilling onto cobblestones in the long summer evenings. Hans Christian Andersen once lived here, and the spirit of his storytelling still seems to drift through the waterfront air. The best way to experience Nyhavn is to arrive on foot from Kongens Nytorv, linger over a smørrebrød lunch, then join one of the electric canal boat tours that wind through the city's waterways.

New Nordic Gastronomy

Copenhagen is indisputably one of the world's great food cities. Noma defined a generation of cooking, and its legacy lives on in dozens of restaurants pushing the boundaries of what Nordic ingredients — foraged mushrooms, aged butter, sea buckthorn, smoked roe — can become on a plate. A meal at Geranium (three Michelin stars, perched above Fælledparken) is a transformative experience, while the meatpacking district Kødbyen hosts a more democratic but equally serious food scene.

  • Book Geranium or Alchemist months in advance — tables are fiercely contested
  • Explore the Torvehallerne food market for the finest Danish produce
  • Try the city's exceptional natural wine bars and craft beer scene in Vesterbro
  • Take a cooking class focused on traditional Danish smørrebrød and pastries

Tivoli Gardens and Cultural Life

Tivoli Gardens, opened in 1843 and one of the inspirations for Disneyland, is a magical collision of roller coasters, concert halls, restaurants, and fairy lights strung between ancient trees. It is sublime in summer and positively enchanting in winter during the Christmas season. Nearby, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek holds one of Europe's finest collections of Impressionist and ancient art, while the SMK (National Gallery of Denmark) is a world-class museum in a beautiful building.

Design, Architecture and the Danish Way of Life

Copenhagen is a city built for human scale. The famous pedestrian street Strøget runs through the heart of the city, but the real pleasures are in the side streets of Frederiksberg, the boutiques of Nørrebro, and the canals of Christianshavn. Danish design — clean, functional, beautiful — is everywhere: in the furniture shops of Bredgade, the ceramics studios of the meatpacking district, and the hotel lobbies that have made Copenhagen an international benchmark for interior style.

  • Visit the Design Museum Denmark in the historic Rococo hospital building
  • Browse the flagship stores of Georg Jensen and Royal Copenhagen on Strøget
  • Cycle across the Cykelslangen (Bicycle Snake) bridge — an engineering and design icon
  • Stay at one of the design hotels along the waterfront: Villa Copenhagen or Hotel d'Angleterre

Getting There and Getting Around

Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is one of Europe's most efficient hubs, with direct long-haul connections from North America and Asia. The Metro connects the airport to the city centre in 15 minutes. Once in the city, a bicycle is the authentic and most pleasurable way to travel — Copenhagen has 390 kilometres of dedicated cycle lanes, and hotels will invariably provide bikes on request. The city's compact scale means most key sights are within easy cycling or walking distance of the waterfront hotels.
